Description This weighty, rich Chilean red is made from the chief grape of Bordeaux's Médoc - Cabernet Sauvignon - prized for its minty blackcurrant fruit, firm tannins and deep colour - plus a splash of 'Reserve' quality Carmenère.
The latter is a forgotten Bordeaux grape, planted in Chile in the late 1800s and thought to be the same as Merlot, until it was rediscovered in the 1990s. Chile has since adopted Carmenère as its flagship grape, producing it sometimes as a single varietal, but more often blending it with other Bordeaux grapes to lend velvety red fruit and spice notes to the wine.
Las Casas de Vaquería comes from the Casa Donoso estate, which is celebrating 100 years of winemaking. It can boast row upon row of old, ungrafted vines, descended from those taken from Bordeaux by the founders in the late 19th century. These produce fruit of excellent concentration.
Winemaker responsible for this Cabernet is Alvaro Arriagada, who can always be seen in the vineyard sporting a cowboy hat (the normal attire in Chile); it deflects the sun during the Summer and keeps him warm in Winter. He also claims to be adept with a lassoo!
